Client: Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), Kingston, Ontario

Contract Type / Kehoe Role: Design Bid Build / General Contractor

Project Summary:

The Ministry of Transportation Ontario upgrade of the ferry service between the City of Kingston and Wolfe Island in Lake Ontario required dredging along the ferry route.

The major challenge on the project was the unanticipated change in nature and quantities of dredge materials. Kehoe was capable and fully equipped to effectively manage the changes in a proactive manner.

Kehoe utilized a full range of equipment for this dredging including a fleet of tugboats and barges; GPS controlled hydraulic excavators operated using non-petroleum hydraulic fluids; underwater hydraulic breakers; a variety of excavation buckets including a toothed bucket, a smooth ditching bucket and an Environmental Clamshell bucket; a turbidity curtain moonpool; sealed dump scows manufactured by Kehoe; and remote turbidity monitors.

Dredged materials included:

Non-Contaminated Class B (Sediment): 116,520 m³ with open water disposal.

Non-Contaminated Class A (Rock): 40,650 m³ with open water disposal.

Contaminated Class B (Sediment): 3,035 m³ with land-based disposal at a local licensed disposal facility.

Contaminated Class A (Rock): 4,494 m³ with land-based disposal at a local licensed disposal facility.

Hazardous Waste: 1,145 m³ with land-based disposal at an interprovincial licensed disposal facility.

Contaminated water was pumped from the dredge site to shore and treated by a mobile water treatment plant to meet the Provincial Water Quality Objectives for release back into Lake Ontario.
